Great Day for Labrador

Dec 3, 2010! Mark it on your calendar, the day Danny Williams resigns. The PC Party's champion will be gone. A day of celebrations for all Labradorians.

Hopefully this is a lucky break for the BigLand, we may have escaped another huge giveaway, a Lower Churchill Falls Development and more polution of the Grand River.

Personally, I looked at this guy as if he had a few grains of intelligence. How neive could a person and a party be to expect to sign a deal on a Lower Churchill Hydro Project with one small group of Aborigional people and roll right over the rest Labrador's people? So stupid, in my book! i.e How could they just overlook the Metis people and expect to lay a powerline across their territory without their direct input?

All the people of Labrador are really stake holders on any Lower Churchill development.

Maybe Harper let Danny and the Innu down, in Ottawa today. Something fishy happened up there. So did he come back with his tail between his legs crying in his coffee? Maybe he decided to resign to turn all Newfoundland voters against Harper in the next Federal election.

What did Williams really accomplish during his two terms as premier? He lucked into Oil Revenuse, he wasn't responsible for it's development. He did butter-up Labrador people with the Trans-Labrador Highway expansion etc.. In my mind that was peanuts to get what he really was after.

I called him the Saviour of the Rock and the Angel of death for Labrador. Will, he could have been the Saviour of the rock if he had gotten this Lower Churchill Power to the island. Taking our power right under our noses would have been like a slow death for us and the prospects for our future. No extra Hydro Power in Labrador would have meant no future industries for us.

He is a quitter, quitting before his term was up just like Brian Tobin.

A very happy day for me. Actually i'm glad he is a quitter. I wonder if he is a major shareholder with Emera in Nova Scotia. Naw! He couldn't be, could he?

Digging In Like Danny

Danny Williams 'Dug In' with the Feds until he was happy, even as far as taking down the Canadian Flag.

We the people of Labrador will dig in until our basics needs are met. Basics needs such as low cost electric power across Labrador, North, South, East & West. Environmentally friendly Industries developed solely in Labrador for the citizens of Labrador to work in, so that they don't have to go away like Newfoundlanders do.

Fairness for all Labrador People, is all that we are asking for. Adjaceny must apply here, and not just for one small group of people; so important as they are. A very large majority of Labrador people must be affected in a positive way. In fact, adjaceny should appy anywhere in this province where there are developments that create jobs & other benefits such as the Lower Churchill Project would.

Sure, this development would help local businesses but Danny Williams should know that basic needs of the people must be taken care of for businesses to be accepted. In this case our electrical needs across Labrador must be looked after. Don't come out and say a point blank statement like Mr.John Hickey said in the past, "we cannot build a Power Line to the North Coast of Labrador, because it would cost $155 million dollars". If you think about this for a minute you would say to yourself, wouldn't this powerline to the North be ultimately paid for in 25 years by Vale Inco anyway and Labrador North would, in effect, end up with a free powerline.
$155 million from a multi billion dollar project isn't much when it is spread out over a number of years, over the centries of Lower Churchill Power it would work out to fractions of a cent per kilowatt hour.

Then it's the protection of the Labrador's prestine environment from fossil fuels. Don't say we could develop rivers South and North that would destroy more ego systems, when we have all this power from Churchill Falls; not good enough!

I believe in the development of Lower Churchill if the positives for Labrador as a whole far out-way the negatives. As the proposed deal stands right now it is drastically in favour of Nfld development at Labrador's expense.

Sure they got some recallable power for us, but like the Upper Churchill Power, how can we really obtain any of it for industry? They just have to put road-blocks in place to stop industry from developing here. i.e. Alcoa Aluminum wanted to set up shop a few years ago in Labrador & our provincial government set hugh road-blocks to stop them. -oad blocks such as, part of your industry must be built on the island of Newfoundland. Naturally it wasn't feasible for Alcoa to do it so they walked away from this fiasco.

The list of one sided deals goes on, Labrador Lineboard, Voisey's Bay etc. Voisey's Bay for example was so bad that one could drive a truck through said Mr. Williams. In fact he spent many hours on NTV with Jeff Sterling condeming this Rodger Grimes deal. Now, today he looks at it in a much more favourable light. Why? Maybe it's because it is really good for his Island of Newfoundland and St. John's area. We know what it is doing for Central Labrador, for example. Diddly squat! The only thing we in central see is the planes flying overhead on the way to St.John's.

We just want to live together in harmony, as much as possible with nature and be treated fairly with our resources.

Do you expect the majority of Labradorians to chase our resources to the island of Newfoundland or to Nova Scotia for jobs from industries developed there from our Power. Not good enough any more!

Settlers vs Metis

There are some people in Lake Melville area who are saying that they will not vote for Chris Montague because he is Metis and he will only dwell on Metis issues when elected. Probably those people are PC's.

What about the fact that John Hickey isn't an Aboriginal person? Lets examine this argument for a minute. Couldn't it also be said by Labrador Natives that they are not voting for Hickey because he isn't Aboriginal.

The point is that this would be lame excuse for not voting for one or the other and it doesn't hold water in many voters books, including mine.

It would be counterproductive for any MHA not to push the issues of ALL his constituents. An elected official who did not strongly put forward the legiminate concerns of him or her supporters would be quickly replaced in the next election, out on the street without a pension, looking for work.

I say, "Give Chris Montague a try, put John Hickey on E.I."

Stop Labrador @ all costs

What is Danny Williams' real plan? Does he have an hidden agenda
Is there a method to his madness?
Think about the Labrador issues and this man for a minute.
Would you or anyone else say that this guy is a dumb, person, with his education and business success?
Does Danny Williams believe in his heart of hearts that the people of Labrador are dumb or naive enough to fall for his antics? Does he think that all the councils (The Combined Councils)of the bigland are that stupid?
Many will say that this premier is not stupid by any stretch. Ok, if he isn't incompetent he has to know that we, the people of Labrador will say an empathic no to this so called energy plan. We the people will say no to his PC candidates and vote against them. He forced us to make, "the ask", to much for him to accept. He is forcing us to say NO.
Why would he pressure us to say no? Good question. He had to know that we would never accept this energy plan for Newfoundland. He threw in Hydro Power for Hollyrood as a project for Newfoundland, he could have thrown in Hydro Power for Voisey's Bay as one for Labrador, kinda balance things out in a fair way(tit for tat). Wouldn't one think so? So, what is it? Is it something to do with Ottawa?

Then there is the Labrador Highway.
Williams will not submit the proper plans to the feds for a highway across Labrador. The feds want a detailed plan for such a road. I'm guessing they want to know, how wide the road would be, what type of surface, how many lanes, distance of the road, estimated cost etc.. So why won't they give the feds the complete details for our road? Could it be that our province don't really want this highway and they know that if they forwarded the proper information to the feds it would be approved and that the highway would have to go ahead immediately and the funds couldn't be used for anything else? Could it be that our provincial government is afraid that with a proper highway system we will do 99.99% of our business with Quebec? Could it be that with a good transportation system this province could no longer hold back industry and progress in Labrador?

Another situation is the Military Base in Happy Valley Goose Bay. How could Williams stop that.
Will he could become such an enemy of the feds that they refused to expand 5 Wing Goose Bay. They refuse to spend such a large sum of money in Labrador solely because of our Premier's attitude towards the feds. Think about it; this fight with Ottawa is mainly hurting Labrador, not Newfoundland.

Is this madness all about keeping Labrador down? If so, why?
How as this government fooled our Honorable Minister John Hickey? As he convinced him to move to Newfoundland to live with them? As John Hickey forgotten who his boss is, who he is really working for? Maybe Danny promised John a job with him no matter what happens in this election. What forces would turn him against his own people, unless he is so selfish that nothing else in the world matters. Hard to fantom

Then again he could be expecting Labrador to fall for such a scheme as the Energy Play and the island would have it made in the shade. The island could use Labrador Hydro for the new Oil Refinery, a Smelter in Long Pond for Voisey's Bay Ore, to replace the Diesel Power in Hollyrood, an aluminum Smelter and many other industries that he will have coming on stream in Newfoundland the same time as the Lower Churchill. All this to save the Rock and bring home every mother's son. All this instead of industries for Labrador, adjacent to their own power.

Energy Plan Rape

The Newfoundland Government is planning to Rape Labrador once again.

What else is new?

How many times will the people of the Labrador take this abuse?

The Williams clan then have the nerve to rub our noses in it by putting it in an energy plan and realeasing it to the public. Must be some kind of a test. The gaw of some people like Williams and Hickey, planning to develop Lower Churchill Power and send it to Newfoundland. Use 250mw to replace the Diesel Power in Hollyrood. No power line for the North or South Coast. They care, less about green house gases in the BigLand or damaging Labrador's prestine environment.

What else can one say?
The good folks of Labrador must be in love with Newfoundland Governments to allow this abuse since 1949.

Some know to well how love works in bad relationships, the victim is afraid or lacks self-confidence, thinks they can't possibly make it on their own, so they stick with their partner in spite of the circumstances.

How can the majority of Labradorians sit idly by without taking drastic action, like kicking out all island first parties once and for all and electing a Labrador Party?

If Labrador residents are scared about being able to survive alone they could use some of their hugh storehouse of wealth and hire the expertise to help them.

Mound of Sand

So who put the mound of sand there and the fence around it? Was it a contractor who won the bid to build the auditorium or did government employees do it?

I'm sure it wasn't the latter, so It must have been a contractor. If that is the case why wasn't the construction continued? One would assume that if the work had begun someone won the bid to do it. I mean, if a contractor didn't get the tender, who would start preparing the land and then suddenly stop?

Usually there is a general contractor involved and they subcontract some of the work.
Tenders were issued and someone obviously won or no work would have begun in the first place.

One would think that if a contractor wins the contract, they have to do the work no matter what, unless there is added work that wasn't anticipated before tenders were issued. In that case extra money would be justified but it should not stop the construction. The original contractor could have finished their work and a new contract issued.

My take on it is that government decided to have the worked stopped and started again to coincide with the election like they have done with other work such as the highway between Hvgb and Lab West and the work on the Goose River Bridge. To me its all a scheme to buy votes with our own money.

Watch out voters, you may be mislead again but this time in a much different way then the Metis were during the last election.

We all should keep in mind that after four years with the PC's, they gave us a couple bones with very little meat on them. What more do you want, Danny might say? What is wrong with a few bones a month before the election?

If its a majority PC Government this time around, they will give us another bone or two, thirty days prior to October 9, 2011 election. Something to look forward to, hey?

Don't you see his plan unfolding before you? He fooled the Metis last time. His plan is to fool the rest of us this time, right? All he had to do was promise us the Moon and Stars, but deliver a few bones, then, him and his side-kick preach to us all what they did with Federal Money disguised as Provincial.

Labrador people, don't you see the wool falling over your eyes? How neive can we be?

Ask yourself this: Why didn't the Williams government start the Trans-Labrador Highway reconstruction between Lab West and Hgvb three years ago? Finish that section first because it was started back in the 60's and it joines larger populated areas to the rest of Canada. Where did the $25 million per year for 7 years that the Federal Minister Loyola Hearn announced April 3, 2007 go to? He did say, there was no strings attached and it could be used for our highway in the BigLand. That announcement excited John Hickey, Graham Letto and Jim Farrell .

Our Nightmare Highway(The TLH)

We just drove across Canada and the only place we had any problems was on the Trans Labrador Highway. We took the shortest route across; you might say the back roads, not the 401.

Anyway, if God can create the Earth in 6 days and we can drive across Canada in 6 and rest on the 7th., this province should be able to build a 500km paved highway between Lab West & Hvgb in 40 years. I say 40 years because that is how long i've been in Labrador and I worked on that road in the 60's. They especially should have been able to build that road with the help of our Federal Government which they have definitely gotten a lot of.

Question for you all: I wonder how much of the $16,000,000,000.00 (16 Billion Dollars) Labrador will get from the Hebron deal that Williams and his clan, supposedally made recently. Do you think, diddly squat or what?

In spite of the past and present efforts of our provincial governments the population of Labrador just went up by 3.

Labrador population control, hey? Is that the game the present and past provincial governments play with us?

NL House of Assembly worries

The house of assembly worries that MHA's allowances in the past may have been used to buy votes.

Interesting, but they don't seem to give a damn about the party in power handing out tax payers money all over the place during an election year.

Oh! They are not breaking any laws you may say, but is it morally right? Do the PC's or Liberals really care about morality?

So what, if it was in the budget? Was it also in the budget to stragtegically hand it out just before an election? Plan your day and work your plan, right? Is that the PC's motto? Is that what Williams' advisers tell him to do? The advisers that are costing tax payers approximately $1 million a year to use our own money against us by influencing our opinions. Use our own taxes to buy our own votes. A cheap way for any party in power to run an election campaign, don't you think so?

If Williams wants government to come clean and stay clean he should make another rule. A very important rule that would have total public support. From now on, no NL Government will be permitted to hand out money for any project during an election year.

I predict right now that, Danny's house of cards will come down hard in the not to distant future.
That the PC's will go so far down that they will have to reach up to touch bottom.

Great 'Newfoundland' Thinkers

There are thousands of great Newfoundland Thinkers, i'm sure.

Their problem maybe that they are not in a position of power like Danny Williams or his predecessors, although that shouldn't hold them back from having a huge influence on public policy and some do. i.e. Sue Kelland Dyer with the Hydro fiasco under Roger Grimes.

I'll just mention two of these thinkers that grab my attention, Sue Kelland Dyer and Carl Powell. Now some may call them a bit eccentric but I think that they are on the border line of genius compared to Danny and his gang.

Imagine a Newfoundland and Labrador Cabinet made up of a majority of ministers like those two individuals. A group that would not bow to the Board of Trade in St. John's or special interest groups in upper Canada, but would do what the voters really wanted them to do.

I can picture Sue and her group having Labrador Resources developed in Labrador for the whole province. Turning those resources into finished products for our own use and for export.
What an excellent idea Sue and Carl and why; pray tell me isn't it done by now. What forces are constantly at work to stop this from occurring? Is it about controlling the population of Labrador or trying to maintain the population of the island of Newfoundland? Whatever it's about; the present and previous governments have failed and succeeded simultaneousally. They have failed to maintain the island population or allowed it to grow and prosper and have succeeded in controlling Labrador's population by preventing industries from developing solely in the bigland.

All NL Governments past and present efforts to save the Rock have backfired. The number of Newfoundlanders that have left this province since 1996 is astounding. I've heard 60,000 residence.

It was said by me before, that our provincial governments have been shooting themselves in the foot since Confederation by keeping Labrador down. After all, isn't it far better for this province to have people from the island going to work in Labrador then in Alberta, unless you want a one town province. If that is the case, why don't they encourage all of us to move to the Avalon and get it over with. To bad for big business in the capital that idea wouldn't work, hey? If that idea was possible their dream would really come true. The dream of Labrador becoming one big warehouse for Newfoundland, just a bunch of barracks up there to hold workers in. Workers living there on a temporary basis to extract the wealth for them.

When it's gone!

As sure as I'm sitting here it will be 'all' gone someday. I'm referring to our Resources, in particular, Labrador Resources. Which Newfie or series of Newfies came up with this brilliant idea of giving it away for pennies or transporting it somewhere else to be turned into finished products? It sure wasn't the thinking, responsible Newfoundlanders. Must be leaders in our industries (industries! what industries?) or our government leaders. Maybe leaders, is to strong a word for them.

What will our future generations do for a livelihood? Where will they go to work? Maybe our so called leaders can't think that far ahead. Maybe that is their number one problem, shortsightedness.

Isn't it about time that we do a study into our intelligence. Maybe we should pay close attention to those upalong folks. Bite the bullet and really dig into the thoughts they have, that we are all stupid Newfies. Yes, they may even be referring to Labrador people. Newfoundlanders are dragging us down with them, you know. You don't think so? will lets examine that idea for a minute. If the ordinary citizen of this province sits by and does nothing or very little to force changes into the way things are being done, then aren't they part of the stupidness going on in our government?

We need quick and immediate action, an about-phase, may, and I stress may, save us from going the way of the dinosaur.

Across the Province ?????????????????

How many times have I gotta say it? Across the province isn't from St. John's to Port Aux Basques.

When will those in authority ever learn. In the first place a province called Newfoundland doesn,t exist. THE OFFICIAL NAME OF THIS PROVINCE IS, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR, unless Labrador is still just a mere sideline, in which case the island doesn't need our Wood, our Nickel, our Hydro, our Resource Royalties, our Taxes etc..

The main jest of this is the fact that Hearn is handing out money all over the island of Newfoundland and no mention of Labrador. Maybe the people of Labrador will have to vote Liberal again like during the previous Federal Election.

Without Notice

I like the way that the Conservatives are going around the country and handing out funding left and right without contacting the provinces first.

Seems to me that in the past the feds gave money to the provinces and the provinces used it as they seen fit and took credit for federal money instead of Ottawa getting the credit. Now the provinces must prioritize their projects and submit proposals to Ottawa before they can be approved. That way Ottawa gets to know what the money is actually being used for.

When the late Lawrence O'Brien was in Ottawa, God rest his soul; he was a good man, I mentioned to him and his assistant Max Butler many times that there must be a way to get money for Labrador without the Provincial government taking it and using it out on the island most of the time, leaving us the scraps. There must be a way Ottawa could help us with our military base in Goose Bay. Regarding the base, Lawrence once told me that it was the government, it was DND who was the problem. So I said to him, are you telling me that DND tells the government what to do; something like a military state, he said, "in a way".

Now the feds should find a way to push this province into fast tracking the Trans Labrador Highway, especially the section between Lab West and Happy Valley Goose Bay. That section simply because it is 30 years or more overdue.

It isn't to difficult to put that highway on the fast track. Just put construction workers on the Lab West and the Lake Melville ends and construction crews in Churchill Falls working towards those two ends. By doing so it will not take 5 years to finish as the time frame now stands.

The people of these large Labrador communities have waited far to long for an highway for trade and for the safe movement of our citizens to visit family and friends.

On again, off again - 5 Wing Goose Jobs

So what is going on here? One day jobs are gonna be cut, the next day status quo and the day after, not so says Serco.

The private company that runs the Goose Bay Air Base says that the feds got less work for them to do up there and that means they need less workers so they are cutting at least 10 jobs.

So much for the status quo!

Are the people of Lake Melville being mislead by the Conservatives as the Liberals before them did? The difference maybe that the Conservatives are using the private company of Serco to do their dirty work for them?

Serco can always tell the citizens of Happy Valley Goose Bay; we are a private company and as such, we have a right to cut our expenses where-ever and when-ever we choose. As a private operation this would be a convincing argument for sure.

The problem with such a scenario is: where does it leave our people if the Federal Government can wash their hands off our one industry town in such a sneaky way?

The feds will honor their commitment to 5 Wing

No Layoffs at Base; Abbass.

Good news today for the concerned workers at 5 Wing Goose Bay.
Yesterday it did not look so good. There was a guy named Gary on the open line show July 2 very worried about his job, mainly because he was one of the employees named in a potential layoff.
Apparently several people were on the list by the Serco Contractor looking after the base for DND.

$671,000,000 Transfer Payments

Wow!

That is a lot of money and that is the figure for this province, for this fiscal year of 2007.

A lot of money on top of all the billions of dollars from Ottawa since this province joined Confederation in 1949.

The people of Labrador should ask themselves this question today:
What the Hell do we get from these huge Transfer Payments? Where is our share, our share for infracture, water and sewer, safe roads to drive on? Highways between communities, especially the larger communities? Highways to trade and move safely on to visit family and friends? Clean Hydro power from our own power source? Industries for our people to make a living in etc?

It's a very sad story indeed.
I surely hope that this small community can recover quickly from such a devastating disaster.

The truth may set us free on the TLH

So, is this the proof that there was never a plan sent to Ottawa for the Trans-Labrador Highway by the Williams Government.

Personally, at this point in time, I do not give a damn who gets the job to develop a business plan for the Trans Labrador Highway or where this company is located.

Just get it done yesterday. Get contractors working on the Lab City end, the Goose Bay end and in Churchill Falls, working towards both ends. Its 30 years or more overdue already.


Hickey Defends Hiring of Mainland Firm July 2, 2007 VOCM

The provincial government is defending its decision to go with an out-of-province company on a transportation contract. Liberal transportation critic Eddie Joyce blasted the Williams government for selecting a New Brunswick company to develop a business plan for the Trans Labrador Highway. Transportation and Works Minister John Hickey says the consulting firm was hired because of their expertise. He says the provincial government wants to make sure they meet all the requirements for cost sharing programs outlined by Ottawa. Hickey says they felt it necessary to secure the services of Geoplan Opus because of their experience in the area. Hickey says the opposition is being hypocritical, as they have also been using the services of the company since 2002.

Our Canada
